Following months of intense campaigning and polling that appeared to hint at a much different outcome, Israeli elections came to a close on March 17, 2015 with a narrow lead for Benjamin Netanyahu and his Likud Party. The election received a large amount of international attention, as it was clear that the result would heavily affect the Palestinian people and their fight for statehood. Netanyahu had made a promise previous to the election that he would not allow for a Palestinian State to be created if he were reelected Prime Minister.
Though many Israelis see this a major victory, the international community has largely been disappointed with the result. Netanyahu and his party have continuously ignored the needs of the Palestinian people, and taken unnecessarily violent measures to maintain their dominance. They continue to kill innocent Palestinians and destroy their homes without warning. As time goes on these practices are questioned more and more by authorities world-over, including accusations of crimes against humanity by leaders in Chile and Turkey, among others.
As a result, many look to the future with uncertainty. Now that Netanyahu has guaranteed that any attempt at a two-state solution will be vetoed, the options are scarce. It seems that, at least for the immediate future, the Palestinian people will have to continue enduring their unfortunate circumstances. This will not only reinforce the unfair oppression of Palestinians, but will also strengthen the tension between Palestinians and Israelis, which may lead to more violence between the two.
